Samsung Galaxy J8 will be available in India on June 28

Samsung unveiled  the  Galaxy J8  for the first time last month. Back then the company said the phone would be out in India at some point in July, but we have some good news. It turns out that the J8 is actually going to be released in the subcontinent in just three days - that is, on June 28. That's a nice example of a rare occurrence in the mobile world - a product becoming available before its initially anticipated release window. The Galaxy J8 will be purchasable in blue, black, and gold. Samsung Galaxy Note9 passes through the FCC, one month earlier than the Note8

Today the upcoming  Samsung Galaxy Note9  has been certified by the US FCC. This is a normal step on the way to its launch, but it's interesting to consider that last year, the  Galaxy Note8  passed through the FCC  at the end of July . Does that mean that all  those rumors  talking about the Note9 hitting the streets earlier in the year than its predecessor were true? It definitely seems so at the moment. The exact model that was certified is the SM-N960F, the international version. Expect the US-specific iteration to be SM-N960U, going by Samsung's most recent naming convention. As this is the international phone spotted at the FCC, it does have plenty of LTE bands on board unsurprisingly. The Note9 obviously has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on board too, along with NFC and MST (the latter used for Samsung Pay). The device is apparently going to be  unveiled on August 9  at an event in NYC, with shipping likely to start before the end of th...

US unlocked Galaxy S9 and S9+ get a security update after three months

Today a new software update has finally become available for the  Samsung Galaxy S9  and  S9+  in the US, namely the unlocked units. "Finally" because these models have been ignored by the company in this respect up until now. This is the first update they've ever received, and they were launched three months ago. So despite no official acknowledgement of the matter, it definitely seems like the unlocked units in the US are on a trimestrial security patch frequency. Hopefully this will change in the future, but don't hold your breath. The carrier-specific models do get more love. Anyway, the new update is build G960U1UES2ARF4 for the S9, and G965U1UES2ARF4 for the S9+. It's a 696MB download, and will up your security patch level to June 1, 2018. Once you install this you'll have the honor of being up to date, security-wise, until the end of the week. That is, of course, if you're lucky enough to get the notification among the first. The update is ...

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 gets new Flame Red color option

Xiaomi has made official a new color option for its  Redmi Note 5  smartphone, dubbed Flame Red. The model has been launched in China, and comes in 4GB RAM and 64GB storage options. As for pricing, the new variant carries a tag of CNY 1,399 (around $213). Sales begin today. With this, the Redmi Note 5 is now available in a total of five color options, with the other four being Black, Gold, Rose Gold, Blue. If you recall, we were  speculating  the Chinese company to make this new color option official during its July 3 event. Now, it seems we'll only see the  Mi 6X  Hatsune Edition getting announced at the event.

HMD confirms July 2 launch for Nokia 3.1 in US

A couple of weeks back, we told you that Amazon has  started accepting pre-orders  for the  Nokia 3.1  in the US, and shipments will begin July 2 onwards. Now, HMD has officially confirmed the July 2 launch for the device in the US. In a press release, the company said the Android One phone (2GB/16GB model) will be available for purchase from Amazon and Best Buy for $159 starting July 2. Color options include Blue/Copper, Black/Chrome, and White/Iron. Note that B&H also has the device  listed  on its website, but the listing just says 'coming soon,' with availability set for the beginning of July. Aside from the US, the phone is  already available in a handful of markets, including Russia and Jordan.

Samsung Galaxy J3 (2018) arrives on T-Mobile as Galaxy J3 Star

Earlier this month, Samsung  unveiled  the  Galaxy J3 (2018)  and  Galaxy J7 (2018)  mid-range smarphones. Now, the former has arrived on T-Mobile, but with a different name: Galaxy J3 Star. The device supports Band 71, which lets users access the carrier's 600 MHz network that ensures longer range of towers with stronger indoor signals. Other than that the specifications remain the same: 5-inch HD display, quad-core 1.4 GHz processor (likely on an Exynos 7570 SoC), 8MP/5MP camera configuration, 2,600mAh battery, and Android Oreo. The device carries a price tag of $175. Of course, you can also go down the financing route, that will have you pay $7 down followed by $7 per month for a period of two years. The Galaxy J7 (2018) is also expected on arrive on T-Mobile as Galaxy J7 Star.

Some 1440p monitors reportedly use 4K panels

WTF?!  There has been plenty of talk about 4K gaming monitors recently, especially with the arrival of 3840 x 2160 144Hz models from  Acer  and  Asus , but most PC owners still consider high refresh rate 1440p products to be the sweet-spot for playing games. However, a recent report claims some people who own QHD monitors might actually be using a 4K panel without realizing it. Citing sources close to panel manufacturers, German website  Prad.de  writes that the costs of producing a 27-inch 4K 3840 x 2160 panel is often lower, or at least the same price as, creating a 27-inch 2560 x 1440 QHD panel. As such, some companies have reportedly been producing monitors that use 4K panels despite being advertised as 1440p. This is said to happen often when panel supplies are low, or monitor demand is high. The site didn’t mention which manufacturers might be engaging in this practice, or what 1440p models could be using 4K panels, but there are a lot of QH...
